As far as I can tell it is all hand quilted and I imagine hand pieced too. The quilting is amazing.
Even the borders are works of art with the sawtooth patteren.
Everytime I look at it I see a different pattern. I think I would have gone a alittle crazy making this one!
Hope you enjoy looking at this one.. I have more pictures for other weeks but now I am back in full mommy mode and have to get the kids off to school. Today daughter #1 has her graduation ceremony from Grade 9! hard to believe.
Update Oct 11/09: I have found out this is the Iceccream cone block. Pattern was published in the 1939 Kansas City Star newspaper.

I'm a quilter and I love quilts. Your great grandmother has done a beautiful work!
ReplyDeleteI don't know what that quilt pattern would be called, but it looks like op art.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful quilt. I can just imagine that the work was long and hard on the eyes...at least it would have been for my eyes! I love the pattern, very unusual. Have a great VTT!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a black and white quilt before. Beautiful!!! Someone spent lots of hours in this piece, Whoever made it, will be happy to know you appreciate it so much!
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful! I use to quilt and knew a lot of the names of them. But this one puzzles me. It is very interesting, the pattern, though.

ReplyDeleteI am not sure when my great grandmother made her quilts. she was born in 1883 so I imagine some time in the early 1910's until the late 50's. died in 1960. She also did a lot of crocheting of doillies, and tatting too.
ReplyDeleteThat quilt is amazing. You think you have the pattern figured out and you look at it again and it is different. Can't wait to see more...
ReplyDeleteThis quilt is just gorgeous...very graphic! very Op Artish!
ReplyDeleteI think the pattern is a variation on the Spiderweb pattern...the quarter circles in the corners are the unique and wonderful difference from a regular Spiderweb.
Ooooo, what a beautiful, beautiful quilt. How she managed that black and white fabric..,that sure had to be hard to keep straight. I just love it..
ReplyDeleteWow, a black and white quilt from your great grandmother. She was ahead of her time, it looks so modern and graphic. What a treasure!
ReplyDeleteI immediately had to think of a quilt in the lasest issue of Australian Homespun (10.5)called Winding our Way. It’s slightly different, but the overall feel is alike! It’s featured in blues and cremes/white.
Lee, what a great quilt! Your great grandmother was very much ahead of her time making a quilt entirely out of black and white! I've never seen one like it before... I just love it! And you mentioned on my blog that it's an ice cream cone block? I see so many things when I look at the photos, and yes, I do see the ice cream cones! Wow, amazing!
